What would you have been if you knew what you know now?
At 12 years old I was working on a school project and I discovered aeroplanes and became fascinated with them. It was the first time I knew what I wanted to be, A pilot, a Fighter pilot ideally then move into private jets after my career in the RAF.
Then I started to grow and during the next two years my eye sight didn’t keep up with my legs growth spurt and I ended up wearing very thick lens National Health glasses and looked very geeky, I also wore a tooth brace. I got some abuse from other kids about my glasses and tooth brace, comments like “Four eyed Nerd, you could never be a pilot you have to see with 20:20 vision.”
So believing the taunts as the truth, I gave up on that dream 🙁
Treated as a Nerd, so I acted as a Nerd and buried myself in the Nerds world of Computers. I had one of the first personal computers a ZX81 and taught myself coding. I LOVED Coding, creating something from nothing, the first “Hello World” scrolling down the page until the 1K memory ran out was better than winning the World Cup in Football, to me….
So I changed my career aspirations to being a Computer Coder (Yes I know not as sexy as a Pilot and I knew it deep down). I needed some cash so I started delivering papers and leaflets and managed to earn enough to upgraded to an amazing BBC Micro Computer ( they look so dated now ) and your phone has more power than this every had.
Fast forward 30 years and I’ve been working with computers and software and for a long while I liked my job, in recent years I’ve grown to like it less and less, I have thought hard why and it is because I have moved away from what I originally loved about computers and that is coding, over the years to earn more money I have had to work my way up the career ladder and move into roles that paid more so I could buy the ‘stuff’ I felt I needed.
So before I hit the half century (mid-life Crisis I hear you shout!)and down hill stroll to retirement ( which will probably be 70 if the government has its way), I have been searching for a job I can love and I think I have found it in the form of being my own boss as a Digital Entrepreneur.
What does that mean? From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Entrepreneurship is the process of starting a business or other organisation. The entrepreneur develops a business model, acquires the human and other required resources, and is fully responsible for its success or failure.
Do you have a job you love?
Ping me a message I would love! to hear from you.
So to my Career Advice:
So if I were joining the job market today, with my knowledge from 30 years experience, what would my advice be?
If you are fresh from school/college I would say think hard about what you love to do, Forget the money, it pays for stuff but unless you have really lots it does not bring happiness. Make sure money is low on the wish list and love of the work high.
Happiness starts with doing something you love, so be what you want to be and love it, do not let society lead you down a path you hate. And believe that you can be whatever you decide, as you will find a way, let no one steal your dreams.
All the best
