On 17th November 2015 Jay Williams and I, along with Bruce our videographer and photographer rocked up at a studio in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire England to create some videos and take some pictures for our business advertising.
It was a cold windy and wet day in Autumn in the UK, we loaded up my car, that was blinking all the gears at me on the dashboard, I don’t think its electrics are too happy, it has done 125,000+ miles, but it will do until I buy a new car ( it will be my first Brand new car ever 🙂 ).
We found the Studio with Jay navigating, often leaving the “turn here” to the last moment, his mind was on the upcoming video shoot…
When we arrived Bruce was already there and we quickly unloaded the car, trying not to lose the lighting equipment to the wind ( weather report said “Storm Barney is bringing strong winds and rain to the UK, as the Met Office warns the expected gusts of 80mph could take down trees and cause some structural damage.”).
We setup and Bruce was very careful to get the lighting just right, this took a while and with lights right, left and facing up, the back screen was shadow free ( apart from a small area where the presenter would stand so fine if not perfect ).
A variety of other massive lights, less bright shone towards the presenter, not too bright to blind and make the presenter shiny and not too dull to make them look ill 🙂
So we are set up and we tested the video and it looks good 🙂
We then tested the audio quality of the camera without a mic.
Agh, it’s really really bad 🙁
So we plug in Jay’s mic and still as bad…
We try Kev’s wireless mic… still bad 🙁
So Jay has the solution, we video and do a separate recording with his audio mic and recorder and match up the two later !!! Sounds complicated and not an ideal start to a shoot we are already nervous about…
We sort ourselves out and start recording some tests, adjust the lighting some more, “stand back a bit” asks Bruce, “Stop moving to my right all the time”, “Ok happy enough for now”…
Bruce explains that his go action is a three fingers up wave with his right hand, and we soon learn not to ‘act’ until he does that action.
Jay tries the first few takes and nails them, checks the video and audio and we are good to go.
Jay rattles through his Youtube ads and if I’ve heard “Hello [wave right hand, not too high that camera does not see, just below head height], I’m Jay Williams and welcome to another video……” at least, oh who knows how many times, suffice to say it’s singed into my brain that when I start my first video I do the action ( strangely with left arm instead ) and nearly say “I’m Jay Williams”…
I do a few attempts and mess up, where do I put my hands, not too low you don’t see them in the shot, not too high you hit the mic, I end up with the thumbs in my pockets and hands out side. I soon find I like waving them about, not something I did in the past, as I was holding the camera ( iphone 5s ) in one hand for most video shots.
We use the same mic so have to thread it inside our shirts and pin it near a button not too low and not too high… each time we change who is presenting… and each time we lose the fluffy end somewhere in our shirts, so you see this funny jiggle to get it out each time 🙂
I’m finding this much harder than I expected, the 90 Day Video Challenge I did with the training academy “Digital Experts Academy” prepared me for talking on video, but not all these lights, the sound ( now being switched on and off by Jay when I present and me when he does, as we did start with presenter doing it and a pain to do and remember lines and look at camera and hold hands in right place and watch for Bruce’s go signal ).
I get a few videos out and Bruce and Jay help me with my tone, facial expressions, hand position, standing with feet closer together, as when I stood they were wider apart ( you look shorter ! and you look like you are thrusting your lower torso position !! LOL – ask me and I’ll explain in full 🙂 )….
We stop for a coffee break and Bruce has a ciggie ( he is giving up ! ).
All good, we alternate between our moments of video flow and get a number of our videos done.
Then we have a few fly issues, not the lower torso ones, but the little black insect variety, so Jay does his Rambo impression and persuades them to stop buzzing into the shot!
Then we have a few battery issues and need to stop so Bruce can recharge [the battery and himself] and get some others from home, all this stop and start is taking it’s toll on the battery and us, at one point I do at leat 5 takes and Jay the same of a simple video, Jay even said on one “This will be simple” and cursed it, as he had to retake numerous times…
For me, it was great to see that even the top video peeps have the same issues of tongue and brain fades…
We soldier on through our videos, getting less efficient as the day goes on, I’d recommend just a 3 – 4-hour video session than an 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. that we did [ next day I’m totally brain mushed 🙂 ]
Then in the afternoon the flies, that Jay did not persuade away, start to buzz about and one even landed on my nose, jumped onto the sandwich and then into my eye !! and then the wind picked up and the rain came down VERY heavily that the noise could be heard on the mic and we had to stop for a while.
[Note to self] – next studio hire needs No Flies, Be total insulated from the outside world, has better lights ( we had a few light bulb issues – e.g. blown and one that kept going off, it did to me in the middle of this most amazing presenting moment, which I never did recapture – sadly …)
We eventually ran out of talking steam and did some head still head shots, Bruce liked the darker look and I went with that, Jay preferred a bit more light, but then looked too shiny so had to wash his face…
I had a few shots I wanted to do one being a Hat shot and another a Glasses shot, I’ll release those soon with some context.
While I had a prop hat on and some glasses that I found in props I took this image of myself 🙂 I like it a lot….
We kept going until 5 p.m. and took a bunch of shots with Jay on a comfy red leather sofa and some with me being the ‘student’ he is teaching his latest course to.
Now we just need to match the audio to the video and use the results for our marketing campaigns…..
If you are wondering what the business is that needs these videos, it’s our training in how to get your business online and in front of clients in the most cost-efficient way and for those without a business already we introduce you to affiliate marketing and the wonder of 40% commission ( $1000 to $8000) without the need for any stock or selling on your part !
